ImproviXations Improvisation has been an ongoing artistic process for me for over 30 years. My passionate relationship with this instantaneous art form has become somewhat of a compulsion. It comes back to the basic need to move and express ideas and emotions through the vehicle of our body and mind. I view improvisation as a demanding form of instantaneous choreography or live composition in which dancers, attuned to an abundance of information, must make in-the-moment decisions as they fashion a dance piece presently in performance. This work is about finding a way to perform without pretense, so that the ability to respond freely and unselfconsciously becomes the goal. In order to do this, the performer has to let go of preconceived notions of performing and begin taking real risks, even risking making a fool of themselves. It takes many years of dedication, practise and experience to pull it off. Reseach and creative processing is pursued wherever these specialists may be. Many international exchanges take place thanks to an exciting collaborative context in which spontaneity and economy of time reign. While performing this type of work abroad, I enjoy collaborating and performing with local lighting designers, musicians, installation and video artists as well as dancers who share this same passion. I also enjoy stepping on stage alone with a ligting designer and a musician.
