LES CINQ MOUVEMENTS
a extemporaneous event
by choreographer
Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood

Choreographer/improviser Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood presents his latest work, entitled LES CINQ MOUVEMENTS, from February 9 to 13, 2005, at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT). Improvisation is the driving force behind this major project, which will see 18 artists share the stage for five evenings of bold new dance.

Each evening, the choreographer/improviser and a guest dancer will perform an improvised duo inspired by an element from the Taoist tradition of China. Performing with Harwood will be Marc Béland (wood), Ginette Laurin (fire), Pierre-Paul Savoie (water), Louise Bédard (earth) and Lin Snelling (metal). Each performance will also feature two different musicians, who will improvise on the theme of the evening. This is an opportunity to enjoy a unique, spontaneous event combining the talents of two performers and two musicians. Set designer and video artist Jonathan Inksetter dresses an otherwise denuded set with video projections, while light designer Yan Lee Chan creates moods specific to each of the elements.

Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood has worked in the contemporary dance milieu for almost 30 years as choreographer, performer, improviser and instructor. In 2000, he founded AH HA Productions, a companydedicated to researching, creating and distributing improvised and structured dance projects. As Artistic Director of the company, Harwood has created close to 40 works, among them the improvisation project Ani*mâles (co-produced by Danse-Cité), which enjoyed a successful performance run at the Monument National in November 2002. Harwood’s solo and group works have also been showcased at numerous major festivals in the Americas and in Europe.

Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood has been working on LES CINQ MOUVEMENTS for the last three years. In an effort to promote collaboration between artists working in various disciplines, he has surrounded himself with performers who share his interest in the art of the spontaneous – high-calibre imaginative artists interested in taking risks. LES CINQ MOUVEMENTS promises to be a magnificent dance encounter marked by intuition, freedom and unpredictability. In short, this is an event worth seeing five times !
