Ani*mâles
in co-production with AH HA and Danse-Cité

This project Ani*mâles is structured around the unexpected - it invites us to the risks of the unforeseen and the playful discovery contained in every instant. Juxtaposing dance, music and visual arts, this creation presents itself as a multi-disciplinary work performed by an all male cast - all international artists who are masters of spontaneous creation. The spectator is encouraged to move around and over the performing space thereby gaining a multitude of perspectives of this constantly evolving journey.

“For this creation I wished to surround myself with accomplished dancer/improvisers and colleagues with whom I have collaborated over the past twelve to twenty five years. All the artists involved in this work share a deep love for the unexpected; all are mature artists committed to an artistic process based on instinct and intuition, innate characteristics found in most animals. Each member of this clan has a distinct personality, a particular voice and a unique way of communicating. Yet, ironically each must put aside his ego, replace it with the challenge of meeting the unknown and take responsibility for the creation of the work together. This demands constant vigilance and an open heart. This complete attentiveness is the soul of the work, it brings all to life making everyone and everything visible on stage.

Perhaps the real unique value of improvisation lies in its live spontaneity, its potential to discover something spectacularly dynamic, physical, and “real” by accident in the instant it is felt. Improvisation is a remarkably challenging performance discipline. It requires a great deal of concentration, presence of mind and body, and abandonment of expectations and ego, all while being watched. Improvisation is really much more like real life, - we start any given day with a plan and then constantly adapt, attempting to flow with the unforeseeable changes that inevitably arise when other people’s plans and intentions intersect with our own. It requires accepting that you cannot control everything. In this model, perfection is not the accomplishment of a predetermined goal, but rather a moment-by-moment process of perception, response, and collaboration.”
